What Do You Do on Your First Day as a ScrumMaster?

Doesn't matter how many times you have done it -- you are always anxious on your first day with the team as a Coach/ScrumMaster.

Here are some tips you might find useful. This is not an all-inclusive list, just a few simple and valuable pointers.
  • Remember everyone's names and their correct pronunciations. There are cultural differences, and many times people don't like it when you butcher their names. If necessary, apologize, and ask the individual how to say it correctly. Perform some association techniques in your mind to put the names to the faces.
  • Look for various recurring meetings and have them forwarded to you. Make a mental map of these meetings. Most of the time they are rhythmic.
  • Have lunch with the team -- yes, not just the first day but every day.
  • Be humble and get to know people. When asked, explain briefly about your professional credits.
  • Don't criticize any lack of agility in the team; that's not a good start.
  • Build trust with the team, which starts from your first interaction with them.
